3 x crafts for children from 3 to 5 years

1. Paper plates and recipes

For this first activity, the child has what it takes to compete with the best chefs. You could help him prepare a ‘meal’ with pictures or other food materials.

What do you need?

  • Old culinary magazines and brochures about nutrition
  • children’s scissors
  • Sheets of paper
  • Glue
  • glitter
  • Food coloring product (optional)

How does it work?

  • First, have your child cut out the pictures and discuss the relevant products.
  • Then ask him  which foods he finds interesting and why he wants to put them on his plate.
  • Then invite your child to create a meal  by gluing the pictures of food onto his paper plate.

Use the different pictures to build his menu.

If you want to add some extra fantasy to this craft, add some colorant to the glue. This way your child can pretend it is mustard, ketchup or another sauce.

When this food collage is ready, the child can fictitiously play with it and serve the plate to their stuffed animals or dolls.

2. A fish aquarium in a shoebox

An aquarium lends itself to a myriad of creative possibilities. With a shoebox  you can create an underwater scene and recreate an aquarium full of cardboard fish.

What do you need?

  • Aluminum foil and paint
  • Rope or wire
  • Cardboard to make sea creatures
  • Tape, pebbles, pearls and anything you can use in an aquarium.

How does it work?

  • First of all, help your child paint the shoebox completely.  Then cut out two large triangles on the long side of the shoebox. These serve as windows for this beautiful aquarium world. If you like, you can use aluminum foil, instead of painting the box.
  • Then put down all the decorations for the aquarium and make treasures and fish. You can cut pictures from magazines or print pictures from the internet. Make sure that the animals always have two sides.
  • Then make a hole through each figure  and thread a thin wire through it.
  • Finally, put the lid on the box or paint the lid to match the rest of the shoebox. Thread the end of the string through the lid and tie a knot to hold it in place.
