Stop yelling at home with these tips

Shouting in the house is a common behavior of parents in certain situations, when their boundaries with regard to the children have been exceeded.

However, even at the point when you are in danger of losing control, it is possible to turn the situation around and achieve a peaceful and respectful household.

When children become accustomed to the screams of their parents, they gradually stop responding to it, but develop a defense mechanism to protect themselves.

Follow these tips if you would like to stop yelling at home and resolve arguments in a different way.

Stop yelling at home by developing self-control

Make it a commitment to yourself to communicate with your children in a moderate and respectful tone.  The best way to properly talk to your children is to lead by example. Speak with respect and be calm, even when the whole situation frustrates you.

Learn to control your emotions in a healthy way.  You are a role model for your children. They will take over the way you behave and react.

Children will learn to be empathetic when you show them how to be.  They will follow the examples set by the family. A child will only scream back when you raise your voice yourself.

Remember that children react like children.  Their behavior is immature because being a child is all they have to do.

The cerebral cortex does not fully develop until adolescence. During this maturation it is important that you are there for them and teach them how to restrain themselves and live a peaceful life.

Show them that you understand them when they show their feelings to you.  When you show them that you understand their feelings, they will see that they can learn to understand your feelings too.

Understanding makes it more difficult for children to cross boundaries and give unhealthy reactions.

Breathe and relax

Don’t hold a grudge.  When you have something to say or when you’re having a bad day, relax before interacting with others.

The accumulation of negative thoughts makes it easier to act irrationally towards your children and the family in general. Try to be calm when reacting to certain situations.

Keep your children’s perspective in mind.  When setting a rule or trying to correct bad behavior, don’t forget to look from your child’s point of view as well.

Try to get your kids to understand your rules. They shouldn’t feel like they have to do something just because you tell them to.

If you’re really mad, keep your mouth shut.  When you are upset, try to avoid reacting aggressively. If you can’t control your words, don’t say anything.

Take a deep breath, think of something relaxing, and  don’t say hurtful things to your kids when you’re irritated.

Words can negatively affect your relationship with your children. Be careful what you say to them.

Avoid stressful situations.  When you know that mornings at your home can be stressful, try to prepare yourself better the day before to avoid this.

If you know that doing certain household chores with your kids is stressful, see if you can handle the situation differently. For example, ask relatives for help.

Distance yourself when necessary

Go exercise together.  Sport is one of the most effective ways to deal with stress. After half an hour of exercise, your body and mind will be more relaxed, which creates a healthier atmosphere.

Making sports a daily routine will undoubtedly improve your relationship with your children. Ultimately, this will lead to less yelling in the house.

Take some distance where necessary.  When the limit has been reached and you feel you are going to lose control, distance yourself from your children. Make time to meditate and find another way to solve the problem.

Remember: don’t talk to your kids when you’re out of control, as your words may have the undesired effect. Breathe in, relax and take some distance when you need to.
