Anxiety about marriage is more common in couples than you think. Making all the preparations and planning a wedding can get stressful and overwhelming. Sometimes you may even want to cancel the whole thing because there are so many different things to watch out for.

But in this article, we’re not talking about this kind of normal anxiety that any engaged couple can have as their wedding date approaches. We want to talk about the fear of marriage that arises in some couples for no apparent reason, just when they just start thinking about it.

While the fact that marriage in itself is nothing more than a legal commitment, in many cases the fear is caused because marriage also involves a loyal commitment.

The influence of your environment

Often the fear of marriage is influenced by your social contacts. In other words, you may be influenced by the people around you and the fears they impose.

How many times have you heard someone say, “Once you’re married, your whole life will be different.” As if that weren’t enough, that phrase is often followed by ” and you’ll regret it.”  This is just a way to negatively influence the mind of the engaged couple. As a result, they may become afraid that they will lose certain parts of their current life.

The most important thing is to avoid paying attention to these kinds of comments. There are couples who decided to divorce after marriage for various reasons. But there are many others who have found that their relationship has actually grown stronger after getting married.

You can’t think that everything will end badly, especially not because of what the people around you are saying. However, getting married has often been a cause for “jokes and laughter” from friends.

Fear of Marriage: Gamophobia

This type of marital anxiety in couples can manifest itself in the form of a phobia called gamophobia. Gamophobia comes from two Greek words: the Greek word gamos, meaning marriage , and the Greek word  phobos, meaning fear or phobia .

When this fear is expressed in the form of a phobia, then you should be concerned. Sometimes outside help is then needed to overcome it when it affects a person’s mental health. Anxiety, obsession and impulsive actions are common symptoms that can result from this type of phobia.

The game of emotions and fear of marriage

Psychology and thoughts play a fundamental role in overcoming this fear. We will return to these two factors when discussing the fear of marriage in relation to the emotions.

Current situation

In the first place, the current circumstances of your life play a role โ€“  for example, if you do not have a financial or job guarantee, have an apartment lease, and so on.

All these factors can lead you to think that the other person does not want this kind of life. Or maybe you think your life is such a ‘disaster’ that you’d rather not share it with the other person.

However, you need to realize and understand that your partner is with you because he or she accepts any insecurity that you think you have in your life. The most important thing for a couple is to talk from the beginning and discuss all the problems to avoid future problems.

Feelings

Secondly, feelings also play a role, such as through past situations that could harm a person. There are several instances where a past relationship has hurt someone making him or her afraid of re-bonding. There is fear that the same will be suffered again.

This type of fear is much more common than you might think. It is arguably one of the most common causes of marriage anxiety. The solution, although in many cases it is more complicated than you think, is to simply think that a relationship doesn’t always end badly, but rather the opposite happens.

Often times, life sometimes just puts obstacles in our path so that we can really learn to appreciate what we have in the present.
