Don't wait to take care of yourself, start now!

Often, mothers put their own worries and problems aside as they adjust to the challenges of raising their children. But it is also extremely important not to forget yourself and to continue to take good care of yourself as your children grow up; taking care of yourself is crucial.

Whether it’s because tradition has taught us or because we just don’t know any better, we often think we should put our own worries aside as long as our children are still dependent on us.

However, this is not necessary at all. Taking care of ourselves and giving ourselves time to relax is one of the best examples we can give to our sons and daughters.

When we make time for ourselves, we teach our children by example, not just with words. In these ways , our children come to know self-love and self-care as something normal,  which need not cost anything or cause problems.

In the same way, we avoid becoming emotionally dependent on our children and also preventing them from becoming dependent on us. In this way they learn to give and to receive. Not only with regard to others, but also with regard to the relationship with oneself.

Take care of yourself and your children

If you wait to take care of yourself until your kids are older, you’ll be remembering an important lesson: how to love themselves. Our children need to learn the value and importance of self-love as something indispensable to all of us.

This means that we need to get rid of the idea that we are worthless as women if we don’t sacrifice ourselves for our family. A mother heals and becomes a woman again when she begins to ignore the role of martyrdom imposed on her by society.

Being a woman does not mean that we have to walk all over ourselves, push our own emotional boundaries, or be left with a burden, however great it may be. A mother who is a healthy woman knows her own worth in the world as an individual and knows what she herself needs.

Moreover, a mother who takes good care of herself and makes time for her physical and mental health will ensure that her children will also take good care of themselves later on, pursue their goals and create balance in their own lives.

Mom, take care of yourself, I benefit too

As we have said, it is important for mothers to take good care of themselves every day. Don’t put yourself aside! It’s easy to forget this or at least make it your lowest priority. But that’s not the point.

Taking care of yourself is essential if we want to make sure that we are teaching our children the best life lessons.

Let’s take a look at some tips for taking care of ourselves.

Make time for yourself every day

Make sure you make time for yourself every day to take a deep breath. Then ask yourself how you feel and relax for a while. This can be a few minutes in bed, on the couch or in the garden. Think for a moment about yourself and the events of that day. How do you feel about those events? This way you can pick yourself up again and deal with your feelings better.

This also directly benefits your children. You are calmer and more organized. Moreover, they see in you a good example of the first step to taking good care of yourself: namely spending time to understand yourself better.

Choose moments to love yourself every week and month

Likewise, you should set aside one or more moments each week to do things you enjoy. This can be, for example, sports, reading or going out with friends. So you have to plan your time well so that you can do all those things that you normally can never do or simply postpone until later.

Make an effort to make time for fun activities that allow you to relax and work on yourself. You have reserved this time especially for you to have fun and get to know yourself. Giving yourself that freedom will make you feel fulfilled, alive and happy.

Work on your confidence

We tend to let our self-confidence sail like a paper boat in the ocean. In stormy weather, this boat can capsize and sink. In this shipwreck our self-love suffers.

  • Remove emotional burdens from your life. Non-constructive comments or actions don’t matter. Your goal is to build up, not tear down.
  • Apply the same principle to negative thoughts and feelings you harbor towards yourself or those around you. By writing these down first and then tearing them up, we can free ourselves from them.
  • Write down all the positive things in your life and reread it every time you feel the need to.
  • Make a list of everything you love to do  and all the things you want to try someday. Do those things for real!

Remember, the best way to teach our children is to set a good example yourself. Let’s not forget that everything that is good for us is also good for our children. In the short term, but also in the long term.
