Why Do Kids Watch The Same Movie Over And Over?

Children watch the same movie over and over for two reasons: first, it has to do with the learning process, and second, it’s related to enjoying what they have discovered.

Children learn through a pattern system. As these patterns are repeated, knowledge and understanding is stored in their heads.

Therefore, they instinctively seek to repeat an activity or activity, as they discover new things every time.

Such a pattern can have the same effect in adults. However, with us the knowledge stays in the brain faster, because the brain has more skills and extra information for this.

You can test this with adults  by having them watch the same movie over and over. They will find that they remember something new every time. 

Memory: the reason kids watch the same movie over and over

Learning through repetition is one of the oldest educational techniques.  Teachers make us do endless multiplication sums for a reason. It really helps students to remember it.

Songs have even been created that make learning the numbers or the alphabet easy.

This pattern can also be found during play in young children  . To remember that the green ball has to go through the green hole, the child will repeat this action several times. Even when successful, he will continue to repeat this pattern.

In movies  , children remember characters and understand the plot of the movie more and more through repetition.

Watching the same movie over and over again gives them a better understanding of the story, which in turn gives them different emotions.

Repetition is also a sign of acceptance.  When children learn new things, they want to celebrate it again and again.

Their brain now understands how to put together puzzle pieces or how to solve a riddle. That’s why they want to test themselves again and again.

With regard to movies, they are very surprised when they find out that they have remembered something from last time. Parents would describe this as predictable.

Children associate an emotion with the fact that they know what is going to happen.  This also provides them with personal security.

That’s why a movie or story told over and over never loses its appeal.

Memorizing sentences, dialogues and actions is a fun, almost magical experience.  The child knows how to predict what the protagonist will do in the future.

In addition, children watch the same movie over and over because they connect it to that emotion they felt when they saw the movie for the first time.

Although they are not aware of it, you can tell by their reaction whether the film makes them happy. This response is stored in the brain.

Some children cover their eyes when the villain almost comes into view. Sometimes they start laughing before the fun part begins. This is because the scene is already familiar and they connect it to the feelings it gives them.

This also happens in adults. Repeating songs, movies or stories is associated with emotions,  with how the movie or song makes us feel and what it reminds us of.

Stimulate understanding

One way for parents to participate in this learning process is to share the moment with their children.

Whether it’s watching a movie together and enjoying the reaction of their child, or also reacting surprised when children tell you what is going to happen.

Another way to encourage understanding is to ask questions about the movie or story. 

• “What do you think will happen now?”

• “Why does this figure do that?”

This technique tests their attention and allows the parent to examine whether the child understands the plot.

Some movies are very complicated and can be misinterpreted by children. Therefore, asking about the story can help children clear up doubts.
